Initial Claims for Unemployment:
The Claims #s are seasonally adjusted and make allowances for seasonal hiring patterns and a slowdown in certain activities such as construction due to winter weather. Thus, the XMas hiring is factored in, but the warm weather in the northern States probably makes the economy look better than it would otherwise look. It is well to remember, however, that the warm weather is putting extra $ in the pockets of construction workers & that's a plus, a lucky break to offset the negative effects of Sept 11th. While I don't look for Claims #s to surge back over 500 thous per week, we'll probably have some "give-back" as normal winter weather returns to the northern States.
