The Greeks also know the diameter of the Earth with amazing accuracy. Columbus got it into his head that the planet was thousands of miles smaller than the prevailing (correct) wisdom had it. It was this faulty information that encouraged him to try to get to the Indies by sailing west.

I just heard the sailing off the edge myth perpetuated just the other night. On one of the talking head programs some professor ( can't even remember what his issue was ) invoked it to defend his off beat theory.

"If Columbus had listened to the so-called experts that he would fall off the edge, he never would have discovered America." I heard that and turned the channel. Nothing to learn from that guy.
