Interesting that the Dec. 15, 2001,"updated" Nasdaq short interest for all issues represents 541 fewer stocks than 12/00, and 423 fewer than 5/01.
Couple that with the recent increase in new offerings, options conversion and insider selling, loads of recent convertible debt offerings flooding the market of late and the short interest that it involves, and very limited company share buybacks, and i think that you have a current short interest that is probably not representitive of a whole lot more than the May top of this year, or the Jan 2001 high... ie: bigger float/fewer issues.
Always so tuff to make any concrete determinations from this delayed and misleading data... very very subjective stuff
