The insight was, sometime after the 386DX-40 AMD lost it's way but found it's way back again. Now, sometime after the 440BX chipset Intel has lost it's way and the question is when will they find their way back again.

I think your concern is valid but out of date. RamBus was a disaster, MTH, Timna, MB recalls etc. P4 die size too big. Merced delays didn't help etc. I think in about 2 weeks you will see things have changed. A smaller Northwood will be manufacturable. DDR will be available. Not long later 12" wafers will add capacity dramatically. Costs will drop and AMD will no longer enjoy the Athlon demand from those who can't get enough P4s. Graphics will be included in chipsets and lowcost MBs will be attractive. Xeon processors with large caches will showup along with SMT. McKinley will offer world leading performance. Meanwhile, Hammer will continue to slip as it has quarter after quarter. Athlon will not get much of a boost from the migration to .13u because they're already using .13u transistors. SOI will be very expensive and not offer enough performance to keep up. AMD will compete by price alone which means more and more red ink. Jerry will hype the stock up and dump his options just before announcing a earnings shortfall. Niceguy will insist this stock is going to the moon and he'll lose just like he always does. Dan will make up more nonsense and life will go on.

IMHO of course.
