And we export to them, simply in a more round about way. When a country consumes as much of the world's raw materials as we do, it is a bit disingenuous to talk about exporting troubles. We are exporting the effects of our greed and our overconsumption every minute of every day. Somehow that should be factored in. 9/11 is a relatively small event considering the size of our country, and the really awful things that happen elsewhere (especially as a proportion of the US population). I realize we Americans expect to live in a perfect world untouched by the misery in much of the rest of the world, but I don't really see that as our "right" or justified in any sense of fairness that I can imagine.

ps- as an overconsumer myself I certainly enjoy my lifestyle in the US. I just can't see any way to defend it as fair or moral or the right thing to do. Which may be what you are saying. If you are saying we should defend our way of life, just because we can, and we want to, then I cannot disagree with that. That is certainly valid- but don't think that terrorists are the only exporters of terror and misery.
