BWAC,<<<Did you cancel? And they shipped it anyway? >>>

I called last week to cancel and a supervisor said they could not be responsible for their supplier (Sony) actions.

<<<My cancelled order still shows as open with an expectd ship date as well. >>>

I think they are saying the same thing to you. Dell is not responsible for their vendor's actions.

In other words, Dell does not manufacture (a lot of) the stuff, they only resell products others make. Sometimes they add value to the products they resell, but other times they don't even get to touch the product. They just pass on the order they take from the Internet, and the manufacturer is responsible for shipping and everything else.

Dell's shares are being sold as if they were a technology company, but they are really a value added reseller some of the time. Other times, they pass on the order they take online to the manufacturer and they will include all revenue they pass on to the actual manufacturer in their own earnings report. They act like an online catalogue company.

What is tragically funny is Dell's valuation is several hundred percentage points greater than the best catalogue companies.

At least, however, the catalogue company repackages the product, ship it, and take responsibilities for it.

Not only did they take an order from me for a sony product that Sony did not have on hand, but Dell couldn't help me to cancel the order when I didn't receive the product when it was due.

Similarly, for the printer they did ship me, the manuals and driver software and CD were missing. Dell tech support told me to go to the manufacturer. They also sent me a parallel printer cable instead of a USB cable. I was so furious that I refused to go through the hassle of going back to Dell to correct the problem that I went out and bought a USB cable on my own.

<<<Something got really messed up with Dell this holiday season I think. >>>

It's not like they are new to business and that they had to shake out the bugs in their computer system. I just don't think they ever had adequate computer systems in place.

If they had these problems with a computer system in place, it would be similiar to your Bank's computer system handing out money from your account with insufficient funds - or a brokerage house losing track of your portfolio. These things don't happen when you have adequate systems in place.
