NEC Computers Inc. Announces High-End Enterprise Server Platform
NEC Express5800/180Rb-7 Server Provides Flexibility and High Reliability for Mission-Critical Applications

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2001--NEC Computers Inc., a leading provider of world-class mobile, desktop and server computing solutions for the enterprise market, today announced its enterprise server platform, including the Express5800/180Rb-7 server, the EMC®(NYSE:EMC - news) CLARiiON FC4500 storage area network (SAN) array, a disk expansion unit (DEU), and several rack and power options, to provide a turnkey enterprise solution for application-intensive environments.

The heart of the enterprise server platform is the architecturally advanced Express5800/180Rb-7 server, expandable from 1 to 8 Intel® Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processors. The server is built on an Intel® Profusion® chipset, which balances CPU, memory, and I/O throughput for enhanced performance and scalability. The Express5800/180Rb-7 combines performance with high-availability features, including 2 internal hot-swap hard-disk drives, 10 hot-plug PCI slots, redundant hot-swap power supplies, and redundant hot-swap cooling fans. The Express5800/180Rb-7 server is ideal for mission-critical applications that require computing power and system reliability.

Through its alliance with EMC, NEC Computers offers high-performance, high-availability storage solutions with the EMC CLARiiON® FC4500 fibre channel disk array. The FC4500 is the center of a complete storage area network (SAN), offering industry-leading performance with up to 7 terabytes of storage capacity and full redundancy. The FC4500 extends the range of EMC storage solutions currently available from NEC Computers. Also available is a 14-drive disk expansion unit (DEU), capable of holding up to 1/2 terabyte of server-attached storage, and a factory hotload of Red Hat® Linux® 7.0 operating system.

NEC Computers also offers a universal APC® (NYSE:APCC - news) rack (42U), featuring greater depth to handle the longer servers and uninterruptible power supplies common to today's short-height form factor. This rack also features a highly perforated door, which allows extensive airflow while maintaining locked-door security. In addition to the rack, NEC Computers offers APC's 700, 1400, and 3000 VA uninterruptible power supplies.

``NEC Computers' enhanced enterprise server platform brings together the key IT elements, including high-performing server and storage solutions, management tools, service and support that our customers demand, helping them operate and grow their businesses cost-effectively,'' said Peter Thayer, director of marketing, NEC Computers, Server Business Unit. ``Its performance and high-availability features make the Express5800/180Rb-7 server the ideal solution for mid-level enterprises running mission-critical applications.''
