They subsidize their farmers, so we subsidize ours. This has been going on for so long
that our farmers are now seriously dependent on farm subsidies as a way of life. In other
words, they've become dependent on government welfare checks.

All this began when the US was a true farm economy and most states and therefore their Senators and representatives made up the majority of the members of the Congress. Their political life depended how much in subsidies were brought home to the "independent" farmer. You remember the old saying " how are you going to
get them back down on the farm after they've seen Washington, DC?" Those guys, as today, would steal from their mother(taxpayer) to remain in Washington with the big shots and other boys and girls. I'm a little(lot) older then most on this thread and I can remember when some of our solon were referred to as "statesmen". No more.
All for ones self. See Daschle, Leahy, Gephart, Kennedy, Clinton and the rest of those demolib pinheads.
Backstabbers all.
