"I understand that some of us consider this world just a staging area and test bed for the next life and, therefore, don't care if we all get along.

You don't see the fundamental flaw in this statement?

"The only good religion is a relativist one."

Generally, Karen, when people use such statements, it is not meant to indicate a belief in absolutism (unless, of course, it is otherwise stated). It is more a limitation of language.

If they are not absolutists (and this context shows he is not), then the meaning to be taken is something like "this is my objective and reasoned opinion: not necessarily TRUE--but informed."

Believing in rational "good, better, and best" answers in an objective sense is not Absolutism, but it would be rather cumbersome to deconstruct a language that relies on its structure for meaning. The alternative of prefacing every comparative statement with, "within the natural limitations imposed by conditional existence and conditional knowledge" would be more than cumbersome. <ggg>

Many people belive in a great deal of certainty around certain facts of logic or science. This is not absolute certainty. The superlative does not require Absolutism. It expresses by its source, the fact that it is an opinion rather than an absolute truth.
