Well this is a silly statement that assumes all Muslims are simple minded and easily manipulated.

Yes, I understand how you would find that offputting. I winced, myself, when I read it. I think, though, that the author was not addressing a Muslim audience. He was addressing an audience of those Americans (if you'll pardon my label) who are of the view that Islam inevitably produces the likes of Osama. I think he is simply saying that there's plenty of basis in the Quran for Muslims to practice religious tolerance and that his ignorant audience should butt out and let the voices of the non-Osama Muslims rise and prevail. I don't think you would argue with that perspective. I agree that his presentation was ham handed.
