As you consider whether AWA deserves bailout money from the Federal cookie jar, recall that in the 1998-2000 period (so cumulative 3 years) America West somehow managed to squander $295mm of shareholder capital buying back its stock while at the same time generating well less than $100mm of free cash (cash from operations minus capex). I wonder if those morons wish they had that $295mm now (since that's about what they are asking the Fed's for).

I expect the management team will get a special $20mm stay bonus to wind down AWA's operations as a reward for their fine financial stewardship of the company.
