It may be partly incompetence, but I think it goes deeper.

JMHO.

If this was intentional, AAPL would have sued microsoft and won.

You must be joking!

Apple can't sue Microsoft. If they did that, Microsoft would cancel development of Microsoft Office, raise prices to vendors who sell Apple products, drop AppleTalk networking from Windows XP Server, and refuse various MSN services to Macintosh users (which they could do both in IE for Mac and in their servers).

You haven't been paying attention. Microsoft has huge monopolist power, and they exercise that power illegally and ruthlessly. This isn't the wacko opinion of some senseless Microsoft basher, but is rather the argument of the U.S. DoJ, and has been ruled so unanimously by both the District Court and the Appeals Court.

It's absolutely not just incompetence. They REMOVED support for Netscape plugins. How can that be incompetence? How do you accidentally remove support for a plugin architecture?

On the other hand, if you were in fact joking, it was just too subtle for me. Sorry.
