It would be interesting to know why the INS and Justice opposed the idea!

I get annoyed when I see people [NY Post in this case] put a label of "common sense" on proposals. Typically, when the government proposes to integrate Federal and Local data bases opponents to the proposal emerge from left, right and center about government big brother and the potential abuses.

It might more easily be suggested that the VIX system [gun purchases] be used to identify attempts by foreigners/terrorists purchasing guns illegally; since that is a single database rather than 50 different databases as the States have. But Ashcroft doesn't seem to be to keen on that notion.
