From moderated---- Technical hitch in GPRS system delays cellular Internet

By Hadar Horesh
Friday, December 28, 2001 Tevet 13, 5762 Israel Time: 18:49 (GMT+2)

A technical problem in the new generation system of cellular communications could delay the launch of
third-generation Internet-enabled cellular phones in Europe and Israel. The fault affects the monitoring system of
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) phones and Internet cellular technology on GSM networks.

The GPRS system is a development of the GSM network on which Partner and Cellcom in Israel, along with other
cellular phone service providers globally, are based. The GPRS system, which continuously connects cellphones to
the wireless Internet, allows high speed access to cyberspace. The fast speed also allows heavy files - music and
images, for example - to be transmitted easily over a cellular phone.

The cellular market had hoped to launch GPRS at the start of 2001 but with delays in development and production,
the first phones only hit the European market in August and September and are still not available in commercial
quantities.

In Israel, Partner set up the infrastructure for GPRS at the start of 2001 but the lack of end-user equipment has held
up operation of the network. Cellcom has begun to set up a GPRS network and expects to have the network ready
for operation during 2002.

Industry sources yesterday said the producers of the phones have not yet announced a solution to the
problem - incompatibility between the existing cellular generation and the GPRS system.

They said the problem does not affect the basic functioning of the equipment, but Israeli companies will not
launch the phones commercially until a technical solution is found.

What else are 3GSM carriers and vendors hiding under their beds?

Do even they know what's lurking there?

Are there elephants amidst the dust bunnies?

apparently...

>> Universal Wireless Communications Consortium Completes Organizational Objectives

UWCC PR
Bellevue, WA
December 26, 2001

The Universal Wireless Communications Consortium LLC (UWCC) announced today that its Board of Governors has voted to dissolve the organization in the near future.

"The UWCC has successfully served its mission to develop and promote TDMA, EDGE, and WIN technologies and their interoperability with GSM and WCDMA (UMTS) over the past five years," stated Frank Urbany, Chairman of the UWCC Board of Governors. "After careful consideration, the UWCC Board of Governors have reached the decision that the Consortium will come to an orderly conclusion since technical development work on TDMA has been completed and further implementation of 3G technical strategies can be accomplished through the recently announced new organization for TDMA and GSM communities in the Americas."

The UWCC, a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Market Representation Partner, served an integral role in the global success of TDMA and EDGE standards. TDMA is currently the number one technology in the Americas in terms of operators, subscribers, and coverage. Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President of the UWCC stated, "Over the years the UWCC made many contributions to the wireless industry." He added, "Of particular significance was the acceptance by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of 'UWC-136' - our 3G submission that includes EDGE and is one of only five accepted and approved 3G standards by ITU."

While serving its mission for seamless global communications, the UWCC set the stage for TDMA operators' migration to GPRS/EDGE and WCDMA (UMTS) technologies by entering into agreements with the GSM community and its representative organizations to continue work on GAIT (GSM ANSI-136 Interoperability Team) and other projects.

"The UWCC was organized in 1996 to serve as TDMA's voice to the world in the wireless industry," commented Umesh Amin, Chairman Emeritus of the UWCC, "Our work has brought us to a point of development of TDMA and convergence with the GSM community that completes our UWCC organizational goals. With the recent announcement of a new organization encompassing TDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, and WCDMA (UMTS) for the Americas, it is the logical next step for the UWCC to close its doors."

The UWCC will continue operations for a short period of time to ensure a smooth and orderly shutdown of operations.

The UWCC is a Bellevue, Washington-based international consortium of more than 100 wireless carriers and vendors promoting the development, evolution and deployment of seamless global wireless solutions based upon TDMA, EDGE, and WIN technologies, and their interoperability with GSM and WCDMA (UMTS). TDMA is the most popular digital wireless technology in the Americas with more operators, more subscribers, and more geographic coverage than any other technology. For more information, visit the UWCC website at www.uwcc.org.

Board Members of the UWCC include: AT&T Wireless Services (USA), BCP SA (Brazil), BellSouth Colombia (Colombia), Cable & Wireless (UK), Cellcom (Israel), Cingular Wireless (USA), Compaq Computers, Ericsson, Industar/KJR, Inc. (USA), Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Movilnet (Venezuela), Nokia Mobile Phones, Rogers AT&T Wireless (Canada), Sony, Telecom Personal (Argentina) and Telefonica Unifon (Argentina). <<
