NZ actually does have a race issue and was born in it. The government is further exacerbating the problem by trying to develop a legal system of apartheid. The original Treaty of Waitangi govt.nz was intended to avoid race problems by making one people while leaving indigenous people to their own devices in their traditional areas if they wished to stay there, within the ambit of overall law. Which is quite a difficult trick when bossy bureaucrats and politicians can't keep their sticky fingers off other people. Apartheid development is not going very well and I expect that before the underdogs get too enslaved, they'll see the trend and complain. But the process continues unabated as of today, the very end of the first year of the new millennium. In case you don't get it, the underdogs are the white people. Others are also classified by Maoris as white for the purpose of getting on top and enslaving the taxpayers. It's funny to watch because many of the people trying to promote Maori dominance are stretching a point about their Maoriness. It's even more funny because in 100 years, most people will be Maori to some extent as the genes madly mix - except that Asians will have taken over and the treaty will be ditched as ancient history, irrelevant to how things actually are. Kiwis are leaving in droves which will change things too! A lot of Asian immigrants use NZ as a free education system and a stepping stone to Australia [the Australians are stopping that trick]. The NZ taxpayer must be one of the more stupid species on this planet. They are now in a minority, so the non-taxpayers have control and are voting to take more and more. I think the golden goose is getting very tired. Maoris have valid cause for complaint. The majority in parliament collects taxes from everyone then spends it on things such as the Symphony Orchestra, Aotea Centre, Te Papa, English History lessons at school, tertiary education and stuff like that which Maoris are either not interested in or can't do. I was always baffled as to why on earth I should learn about a series of ancient English Kings and refused to do it [being threatened with a beating if I didn't - so I learned enough to avoid the beating and hated the teacher and the subject ever after]. Maoris must have been even more baffled than I was - they responded to geometry and silly proofs of Pythagoras, English history and Pommy Poetry by bailing out of the education system as soon as possible. Their complaint is the same as all people who work, are taxed and watch politicians spend it on their friends and personal preferences. It's why governments should be tiny rather than Kremlin Central Planning monster bureaucracies entering every corner of life. Democracy seems to be the essential problem. Voting to take other people's money is NOT the road to human happiness though it's held up as the highest ideal these days. Maoris would do better to vote for freedom, rather than to get on top and take over from the current slave drivers. If they thought the Poms running the show was bad, they will get very short shrift when the Asians take over. They need only look at Taiwan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Japan to see what to expect. No more of the eccentrically freedom-loving happy-go-lucky Middle Earth Kiwi style which derived from the English eccentricity and freedom-loving values combined with the legal system, respect for other people and their property, Polynesian smiles and troppo attitudes. web.mit.edu The individual will be subsumed by the family, the community and the Great and Glorious State with wondrous Mighty Leader = Pansy Wong. The Kiwi tradition of poking fun at the leader, who probably lives next door or is a relative, [so one has to be polite too] and eats Fish and Chips out of a newspaper along with the rest of us, will go the way of the Moa [a bird as extinct as the Dodo]. Maybe it's time to hand over The Lord of the Rings, go into exile, grow old and die. Mq PS: This is germane to Foreign Affairs of the USA because the same problems are everywhere and also within the USA. How to deal with aliens. Democracy or something else for Afghanistan? How will the increasingly globally dominant USA handle indigenous people? Will aliens have rights or simply be disposed of by 60% military tribunal?
