Oracle says to cut 400 to 800 jobs

NEW YORK, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Database software giant Oracle Corp.(NasdaqNM:ORCL - news) on Friday said it would cut between 400 to 800 jobs, mainly its North American consulting and sales operations.

The cuts represent about 1 percent to 2 percent of its worldwide workforce of 42,000.

``Oracle is realigning certain areas to be more efficient,'' the company said in a statement.

The exact number of jobs cut will not be known because some of those affected may be transferred to other areas of the company, a person familiar with the situation said.

Shares of Oracle on Friday closed up 7 cents, less than 1 percent, to $14.06. In after-hours activity on Instinet, shares traded at $14.08.
