Yesterday's New York Law Journal has a page 1 article re top law firms are paying big bonuses. 2 and 1/2 months ago a top firm said it wouldn't give bonuses. Then a firm announced it was giving bonuses. Then other firms announced they would give bonuses. Then, the first firm changed and is giving a bonus. So first year associates are getting $125,00 to $140,000 plus bonuses of $20,000 and more. Some bonuses will be $50,000 or more. Bonuses like this and even higher were given last year because some associates were tempted to go with start ups, dot coms, ipos. The bonuses were supposed to be a one time thing. Also, supposedly, things were slow this year, except for bankruptcy.
