<Amazing how a small, resource-poor country ruled by the Brits could do what it did in the 19th Century>

It's funny how people think rule by the Brits was some horror story [usually Americans, I suppose because they have been brainwashed about their great fight for independence and how evil the British are, the monarchy, class systems, oppression of the wonderful, loving, IRA etc].

In fact, take a look around the globe and you will find that where the Brits ruled, life is pretty good [unless independence has led to people like Mugabe or Idi Amin taking over].

Singapore, Hong Kong, Middle Earth, Australia, Canada, USA. The USA, Middle Earth, Australia took over Japan after WWII and imposed a constitution resembling British Rule. Japan has since done very well. Germany too! South Korea has done well under USA tutelage. India is still poor, but that's because they vote themselves poor because of a slavish adherence to Marxism and State Control. They threw out the Poms, but kept the bad part. At least they kept democracy, English and many institutions, so as soon as they choose to do well, they will zoom away from poverty. They don't need a revolution, just the idea that capitalism is actually a good thing. And another election to throw out the Statist controllers.

Imperialism and colonisation is considered a bad thing these days. But it's happening as the WTO strides around the world [with Chief Hobbit, Mike Moore, from my local village, as ringmaster], as WARC sets spectrum policy, as all sorts of global rules are established. The USA sets other standards by trade restrictions, bribes and outright bullying.

I think Colinisation and Condominiums are good things. But there will need to be some human rights improvements. A military tribunal is a reasonable way to handle thousands of Taleban conscripts and volunteers and Osama's survivors. But better institutions are needed for the long haul. Also, mob rule by democracy is no way to run a railroad.

PS: Relocation for winter only! The Grampian Mountains in Scotland are the bleakest place I have seen. Edinburgh is nice, but not tropical enough, even in summer. Kauai looks more the place. kauai-hawaii.com But perhaps Darwin or north Queensland would do it.
