As I understand it, UCBH does trade financing. That's somewhat risky. Mr. Wu and his colleagues won't know the people in China to whom they are lending money as well as they can know the Chinese people of California with whom they deal. Even though he has set up a Hong Kong office he still has information risk. If he lends the money to importers in California he still has indirect exposure to the failure of the exporters in China to send the goods. This is a universal problem with exporters in poor countries.
If all goes well this would be a marvelous investment for the reasons you cite. But there are dangers out there.
