BART ridership declines; economy blamed

Ridership on the trains of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District [BART] is running 5 percent below projections so far this month, figures released by the transit district today show. July BART ridership declined 3.5 percent from what had been expected, its officials say.

But one of the San Francisco Bay area's two other commuter rail systems -- Caltrain -- shows no indications of any decline in their ridership. The third, and smallest, ACE Rail, saw a 10 percent decline in ridership in July compared to June.

"The effects of the bankruptcies and layoffs at Bay Area technology and corporate businesses are most likely causing a decline in our ridership," says Tom Margro, BART general manager. "We have not seen such a downturn in ridership of this severity since the recessionary economic period in 1986-1987." ...
