Indian soldiers killed laying mines

Police and army officials say 12 Indian soldiers have been killed laying mines to deter Pakistani tanks.

They say gunfire has also resumed across the border in the Jammu region of Jammu-Kashmir state along the disputed Line of Control.

India is refusing to hold peace talks with Pakistan until it stops the backing of Islamic guerrillas fighting Indian security forces in Kashmir.

Meanwhile, India has begun preparations to camouflage the Taj Mahal out of fear of Pakistani airstrikes.

Tailors are stitching more than 400 meters of khaki, black and green cloth, to be strung across the legendary 17th century marble mausoleum.

Workers also have started construction of five bunkers to house armed guards around the monument.

Officials say they will try to hide its four minarets and dome from a possible Pakistani airstrike, if a full-scale conflict between the two countries breaks out.

We have learned from the events of 9/11 that Americans are compassionate people. People who didn't
know a single soul in New York City wanted to reach out and touch the shoulder of the survivors and
let them know that all Americans cared.

American school children reached out to Afghan children as well. American kids sent their allowances
to the Afghan children because they saw on tv how many Afghan children and adults suffered because
they didn't have food, clothes, medical care or money.

So, I believe that if Americans knew that children and others in Afghanistan were often blown
to bits by land mines, there could be a public outcry against the United States for
its manufacture and sale of land mines, especially when only two other countries refused to
sign a treaty that would ban land mines.

I believe you wrote that the three countries who refused to ban land mines were: The United
States, China and Russia.
