Mr.Keller's Byzantine and bewildering defense of the now wildly and deservedly unpopular "the best defense is no defense" theory is one that only a mother -or another ideologue- could love. It shows the lengths to which the human mind is capable of going in pursuit of reasons for its prejudices. What is wrong with people like Mr. Keller who even after September 11 remain resolutely opposed to simple and obvious self-defense measures such as missile defense programs? How can a rational being assert as Mr. Keller does that since missile defense would not protect against a non-missile attack there is no use bothering with it? Are such people ill - or merely foolish? The answer, I believe, is neither. Rather they are interesting manifestations of ethology and evolutionary biology who are predetermined, no doubt by genetic makeup, to favor submissive gestures and avoidance of aggression in response to perceived threat from an adversary. Their makeup compels them to lower their eyes, their snouts, even to grovel and to roll over, exposing their bellies to an enemy as a strategy to promote their survival by diminishing their ability to threaten the aggressor in the hope that he will therefore leave them alone. Since they are biologically destined to be submissive to threat and thus to avoid any possibility of giving offense to potential aggressors, individuals of the Keller type will always find some pretext for not defending themselves in a straightforward and obvious way. They can be counted upon to favor unilateral disarmament and worthless arms control treaties as well as to be opposed to any scheme of national security that might annoy those against whom such security might be needed. For the Kellers of the world it is simply too dangerous to defend oneself - and the safest and wisest course is therefore to grovel and roll over to show the aggressor that one means no harm. It is quite useless to try to discuss such biologically inscribed survival behavior in rational terms because people thus affected lack the possibility of altering their thinking and behavior. Some means will always be found to rationalize what at bottom is an instinct to avoid aggression by submitting. Since they are becoming so few and since their ethological interest is so great I suggest that Mr. Keller and those who think like him be contained and provided for at public expense in scientific zoos where they can be more thoroughly studied for the clues they can yield to human behavior. They are becoming an endangered species and it would be wise to keep some specimens for further study before the tribe becomes extinct as a cosnequence of its collision with reality.
