OT-EU-history, if you study the origins of those "ranks", you will find them in sweden-finland,
the first standardized, interchangable, field repairable muskets and light weight cannons,
plus the 60 reglemented steps needed, all mass-printed, easy to read manuals with the technology of
gutenberg.
(that was when we almost conquered all of europe, but sweden run out of finns too soon, luckily,
in general they fought every war to the last finn, until we got tired of them, in 1809)

That is, the swedes usually did that slow rank thing, although faster than the eruopeans,
one rank less, and at the critical moment the more creative finns did their thing.

Sorry could not miss that one, as well as Sweden ending it's emperial claims in 1809, not a
war since that, finland has, as always, been in a better position to take the couple of the attacks
since that.

Btw, just earlier, 1700-something, the english messed up themselves here too.
(some say they then started to concentrate more on USA and Canada to get the timber and tar)

Btw,btw, the french belgians are not free of blame either, they helped setting up that musket
and cannon industry in the early 1600s. But since 1809 it has mainly improved.
(well, except all those swedish bofors canons and bribes in India, toppling the government, 1970 or 1980??)
