Good points, there is a quality of life function in regard to mass transit which should be factored in. For instance, in the Seattle area, the ferry system hasn't been self-sustaining for years, but it does give us a unique way of life few would want to completely abandon.

When total costs are factored in, I doubt the automobile/truck transportation system is completely non-subsidized. Roads cost a lot of money in maintenance, so do bridges.

The key toward building a mass transportation system which works for the betterment of the area is visionary leadership. Something we have been seriously lacking in Washington State. The Democrat Governors we've elected simply lack the leadership attributes necessary to build coalitions across political divides, and engender support toward a common transportation vision.

If the citizens had instead elected John Carson as Governor of Washington State (A conservative), you can bet by now he would have built those bridges across political divides, and came up with a sound transportation plan accepted by the majority of citizens.

Leadership is the key. When the left starts holding Governors accountable to results, instead of allowing them to whine about who is to blame all the time, things will change in Washington State. Until then, nothing will be accomplished. The politics of blame serves no purpose. Yet, Democrat Governor Gary Locke (as well as the Democrat Governors before him) have used it as their sole method of re-election.

As the Jedi Master once said, "there is no trying, there is only doing". Leadership is about *doing*. Something Gary Locke and his constituents haven't figured out yet.
