Not sure about the nomenclature. Could be true though. I suspect boxmakers paniced, decided one platform (maybe didn't want to mess with PR ratings). Intel had the chips and AMD didn't have XPs so Intel sealed the Christmas deal.
XPs seemed too chancy maybe, like you said.
