"Are you saying that AMD is not offering the same prices that they once offered to Gateway, HP and IBM and that’s why we are not seeing Athlon XP’s? Isn’t this contrary to Jerry’s market share strategy?"

One of the benefits of being smaller...No need to play into INTC's sucker game in North America if all the product is spoken for elsewhere...Maybe, just maybe, INTC has suckered itself on this one be concocting OEM deals that may not be in the best interests of their bottom line given AMD's existing XP supply constraint!!!

I believe that Jerry was in an interview recently (or perhaps it was one of those webcasts) saying that AMD was altering its strategy, targeting higher ASPs.

You are aware, are you not, that the Athlon XP is much more expensive than the Athlon before the release of the Athlon XP? We're talking about a 100% or more delta here at the top end.

RE:"Dan said that Intel had paid Comp USA not to stock Athlon’s which I think is absurd."

Intel may have matched AD dollars along the line for large OEMs then through CompUSA in some way.
Based on the condition of CompUSA they may have been ready for "help"...

Yep. Just look at PriceWatch if you don't believe it. Carefully compare the price of Athlon vs. P4 at equivalent clock rates (or even model ratings). Yeah, I know that the OEMs get a better price than what you see on PriceWatch, but the relative price is similar. Consider that the primary source of chips for the gray market (which is what PriceWatch is all about) is OEMs that dump excess stock...

There has been a major paradigm shift at AMD. I don't know why or how, but in this quarter they are competing on more than price. It hasn't been enough for them to show a profit, but it does mean that they will lose less money than they might have otherwise. Yeah, I'll grant you that this is different than they have done in the past, but different it is. I'll bet you that if you examine the price erosion of any processor that you choose to pick on PriceWatch, you will see that it has decreased by a smaller percentage than in any other quarter in the past two years. So what they are doing must be working...
