Verizon "Blew It" in cdma2000 and Sprint a clear
winner, reports

date: December 30, 2001

Forbes/Andrew Seybold's Wireless Outlook, a monthly investment advisory
newsletter focused on publicly traded wireless technology companies,
suggested Sprint will emerge as the clear winner in the US 3G race at the
end of 2002.

After being "smart enough to deploy Qualcomm's cdma2000 1x digital
technology -- a technology that will almost double the voice traffic capacity
of a cell site and provide 153 kbps wireless data speeds," Verizon has
downsized and folded their wireless data unit back into the voice side of
the business, a move that is tantamount to walking away from wireless
data -- writes Editor Andrew Seybold in an unsparing criticism of the
company's move published in "Forbes/Andrew Seybold's Wireless
Outlook."

With Verizon and Sprint clearly ahead in the race to implement Third
Generation (3G) networks, the decision essentially yields the cdma2000
field to Sprint, and "...unless Sprint muffs this opportunity it will emerge at
the end of 2002 as the clear winner in the battle for wireless data
customers," he writes.

While castigating Verizon, Seybold also explores the activities of other
players in the 3G arena -- networks, content providers and device
manufacturers -- noting two factors that show promise for wireless data: a
survey indicating that more than 63 percent of CTOs have budgets for the
technology.
