Even more interesting, those who pay their debts literally have money to give away instead of having it taken away. Credit card interest is not tax-deductible, and no one admires you for paying it either. Charitable donations have the exact opposite effect. Though as (I am afraid) Macchiavelli said, you don't want to make yourself poor giving away money because that puts an end to your prestige.
