Gold rises in short session

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Gold futures prices rose Monday in a shortened pre-holiday session.

Gold for February delivery was up $2.20 to settle at $279.00 an ounce on Nymex's Commodities Exchange division. The March silver contract settled up 0.9 cents to $4.588 an ounce.

March palladium fell by $1.50 to settle at $448.00 an ounce. The January platinum contract rose to $493.00 an ounce, up $6.50.

March copper fell 1.80 cents to settle at 65.95 cents a pound.

Shares turn around

In the equities market, after slipping in the morning most issues were up in the afternoon. The Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index ($XAU: news, chart) rose 1.5 percent to 54.38 and the CBOE Gold Index ($GOX: news, chart) rose 1.7 percent to 41.38.

Among individual issues, shares of Placer Dome Gold (PDG: news, chart) rose 14 cents to $10.80 and Newmont Mining (NEM: news, chart) rose 10 cents to $19.05.

The Amex Gold Bugs Index (HUI: news, chart) stood at 64.28, up 0.5 percent from the previous session.
