CDMA2000 did happen in 2001 - just not in the US. The global belt tightening by the telcos delayed 3G deploment for the past year and a half. VZ has no interest in setting the standard, they just want to follow. This company still treats voice mail like a special feature. PCS has given specific instruction that CDMA2000 would happen in 2002 since last Feb. However, we seem to think that the availability of 3G handsets would be picked up in the US several quarters ahead of network activation of 3G. Jacobs deserves some criticism for projecting these expectations. However, there are several 3G models in the US. They just don't look any different than the CDMAONE models. Nonetheless, they are planting seeds for capacity enhancements for customers that have bought the phones without any knowledge the phones have 3G potential.

The difference between CDMA2000 in 01 and 02 is that it is going to be deployed on US soil - not just Korea. The same will happen in Japan and China. Wireless voice services will evolve to a new level of IT network computing. Digital voice, voice mail, caller id, wireless web, and other current features will be leveraged with high speed internet, gps, brew applications, color monitors, bluetooth, and other new features.

The perceptions for 3G are going to change once it becomes commercial in the US and people generate excitement about the potential.
