If you're not paying for updated virus definitions you are not very well protected. It's kinda like when your car's air conditioner gets low on coolant. You've still got air conditioning but it don't work very well! If you want a free one you can get AVG Virus protection. IMO it's very good and best of all, it's free. If you go this route, uninstall McAfee and then install AVG.

Harold,

Looking back at the history of your problems, I tend to agree with TC. Your problems are most likely related to AOL.

Follow TC's instructions to minimize AOL and start Internet Explorer. If Internet Explorer does not seem to be accessing the Web, click on the "File" menu. If there is a check mark next to the "Work Offline" option, click on it to deselect it. Then try accessing any Internet Site.

If IE is still not accessing the Internet, click on Tools / Internet Options... Then select the Connections tab and make sure that the AOL "Dial-up settings" are selected. If not, select the AOL "Dial-up settings", then select the "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" -or- "Always dial my default connection" if AOL is set as your default connection. Then click on "Apply" and then "OK".

You should run a virus scan with a current version of the McAfee "dat" files, or use one of the sites that lifeisgood or TC suggested.

Hope this helps.

B.K.

Harold,
I also had McAfee. I subscribed to their Viruscan online.
I daily updated new dat. files and scanned as well but was
'hammered' by the SIRCAM virus. They were the last to get a
fix and their support was terrible. I bailed on them and
downloaded Norton and have been very pleased.
I also run Aol for the family and have had it freeze up
java stuff. As thecow previously suggested, if aol is
your ISP, minimizing it after you're connected and clicking
on your Internet Explorer icon and browse with that should
help eliminate some of your problems.
