Mary - Re: "IMO, Intel is really a proxy for the strength of the US tech driven economy. If Intel valuation collapses, the whole US economy would collapse."

This is absolutely correct.

Witness what happened to Intel on September 22, 2000 and afterwards, when they unloaded the "news bomb" that they had seen a sudden drop in business in Europe.

Nearly every other company - AMD, Cisco, Dell, Compaq - just shrugged their shoulders and said - "BIG INTEL PROBLEM - but WE'RE doing FINE !!!"

By January, 2001 the impact that Intel saw - clearly the beginning of the wave - had caught up to nearly every single technology company and all these stocks followed Intel's down into the dumper.

Mary, RE: IMO, Intel is really a proxy for the strength of the US tech driven economy. If Intel valuation collapses, the whole US economy would collapse.

I guess that depends on your definition of collapse.

Given that we're talking about a 50% drop in Intel's price here, I'll take that as a stock collapse.

From fall 2000 to fall 2001, Intel's stock price declined about 75%. And yet, during that period of time, the US economy grew. It didn't collapse at all.

IMO, the importance of tech in the US economy is vastly overstated.

Mary, Re: "By any kind of logic, if Intel stock drops half its value, so called technology companies like Dell Computer would collapse completely.

IMO, Intel is really a proxy for the strength of the US tech driven economy. If Intel valuation collapses, the whole US economy would collapse."

Well said. So much of the U.S. economy is built on technology, and much of technology is centered around semiconductor heavyweights. While Intel doesn't carry all the world on their shoulder, the kind of collapse that some people are projecting would cause a massive vacuum that would essentially affect everything around it. That's why I'm bookmarking a number of these projections, so that I can post them here in a year or two and laugh at the absurdity of them.
