News Advisory:

Leading economists and long-time Fed watchers will
participate in a day-long conference on the performance of the
Federal Reserve System at the National Press Club January 7. The
conference will examine the realities of the Federal Reserve
versus the myths that have grown up around the institution since
its formation in 1913.

Keynote speaker at a luncheon session will be James K.
Galbraith, Ph.D, Professor of Public Affairs and Government, at
the LBJ School, University of Texas, who has lectured and
written extensively on the Federal Reserve System.

Among other participants will be William Greider, journalist
and author of Secrets of the Temple, a widely-acclaimed book on
the inner workings of the Federal Reserve; Tom Schlesinger,
Director of the Financial Markets Center which conducts and
publishes major research on the Federal Reserve; Jeff Faux,
President of the Economic Policy Institute; Robert Auerbach,
Ph.D, professor at the University of Texas; and former chief
economist of the Banking Committee of the House of
Representatives where he conducted investigations and studies of
the Federal Reserve.

Also scheduled to speak at the conference are Sheldon
Friedman, economist, AFL-CIO, who has researched and written
extensively on the Federal Reserve System and its impact on
jobs; Kenneth Thomas, Ph.D, lecturer on finance at Wharton
School and writer and expert witness on regulatory issues
involved in bank mergers and the enforcement of the Community
Reinvestment Act by the Federal Reserve; Jim McTague, Washington
editor of Barron's; Walker Todd, former assistant counsel and
research officer, Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank; as well as
representatives of community organizations which monitor the
Federal Reserve's performance on fair lending and the Community
Reinvestment Act.

Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has been invited to
speak at the conference.

The conference is sponsored by Ralph Nader and the Center for
Study of Responsive Law.
