People flaunt the Spanish Inquisition because there is so little to go on. However, the Inquisition was as much political as religious. Ferdinand and Isabella had recently united Spain, and were on the lookout for a "fifth column"; it was under the Crown, although the Pope protested; other Spanish possessions, like the Netherlands and Genoa, successfully resisted having it established in their territories; and only about 3,000 people were harmed by it, being despoiled of property, injured, or killed. It also occurred over 500 years ago, when judicial standards were deplorable, and it was common to use torture to extract confessions.....
