Yup at current efficiencies, materials, and scale of production photoelectrics are a niche product. However, wind counts as solar as does hydro maybe. Then there is thermal solar electric. As far as transport goes, we have a technology for natural gas. I think our future energy needs will be met by a changing mixture of technolgies many of which seem totally impractical or are unknown now.
