FWIW,

Just came back from my local Albertsons grocery store. They have a Casio "640x480" digital camera, with 4 meg of internal memory, for $59.95, marked down from $99.95.

Lots of folks can get hooked into digital photography at a $59.95 price point.

John

Tumbleweed, re: "Not if they ever want to enlarge ..."

Like you, I would prefer a 6MB SLR with interchangeable lenses. Unfortunately, few people are willing to put up with high prices, complicated menus, and such.

My sister makes a nice living posting teeny little pictures at eBay of stuff that she has found at garage sales. Despite my advice, she decided that a 1 megapixel camera was all that she needed. In her case, an eCam was just a "tool".

IMHO, $299-$399 is the right price range for "the masses". I am obviously not alone because there are now many cameras available now in that range. Arguing in your favor, the number of megapixels that one gets per buck will change with time so -- eventually -- your perceptions (and mine) will meet with the needs of the masses.

KODAK got rich exploiting photographic needs of the masses. They have gotten poorer recently as things changed and then began to settle down. Perhaps next year will be "their time".
