Sluggish year ahead for UK economy

BRITAIN'S leading economic forecasters have predicted a
further slowdown in UK economic growth this year,
despite new figures suggesting that the consumer boom is
continuing.

Several think-tanks believe household spending will drop
back in 2002, creating a drag on growth. However, data
from the British Bankers' Association yesterday suggested
that the effects of the economic slowdown and rising
unemployment have yet to dampen consumer
enthusiasm.
