Hi Frank,

I visited Teledesic in 1996, when they were changing over from ATM to IP, and were confronting the lack of location information in IP, whose distance metric is time.

Separation by oceans, mountains and political boundaries were the quick summary of where satellites would win.

Where people would pay (enough) went unstated, but the recent termination of AstroLink indicates there must be a terrestrial distribution network for the satellites to serve.

Just as in the '60s, Popular Science thought we would all own helicopters in the '80s, but their use hasn't become that simplified or reliable.

Imagine the satellite terminal in a high wind, controlling the uplink beam to 0.5 degree accuracy, without a radome. Tough requirement. Handoff to another satellite. Tough requirement.
