Even as China's CDMA 95A network is operational as on 1/1/2002, the follow up CDMA2000 1XRTT network has been completed in 7 major cities and will initiate trials on the 100,000 sub network and services soon. Clearly CHINA is busting it to get their 1X network operational ASAP. I have to think that this effort is preliminary to an additional CHINESE committment to CDMA for future needs beyond UNICOM AND/OR a committment to 1X EV DO just as in Korea.
China Unicom said 1x trial completed in 7 cities

date: January 1, 2002

China Unicom announced the construction of CDMA 1X trial network has
also been completed in 7 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou,
Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanchang and Haikou and will start the commercial
trial on network and services soon.

China Unicom adopts the IS-95A enhanced technology standard for its
phase one CDMA network construction and has well prepared for its
smooth migration to CDMA 1X technology. In addition to the launch of
basic voice services and various value-added functions, mobile intelligent
network and short message network will also be launched. Total capacity
of the CDMA 1X trial network in 7 cities reaches 100,000 subscribers and
other new services put on trial include high-speed internet access,
pictures download and viewable mobile phone and etc.

Mr. Wang Jianzhou, President of China Unicom said, "CDMA technology
has been widely recognized because of its unique superiorities of better
voice quality, higher transmission speed, greater security, lower handset
radio transmission power and higher wireless data communications
capabilities."

On October 13, to tie in with the arrival of the Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation Summit in Shanghai, China Unicom Shanghai held a CDMA
Technology Presentation, to demonstrate its CDMA - 1X high-speed
cellular trial network which is to be launched first at the downtown area
along the two sides of HuangPu River.

The average data rate of China Unicom's CDMA - 1X trial network in
Shanghai as proven, is 80 kbps and the peak data rate can reach as high
as 153.6 kbps, exceeding the 3G standard of 144 kbps.

<<GLBX has ceased to exist (and been trading as GX) for a long time.>>

Either old habits die hard or I celebrated a little more than I intended to last night (I think it's the former). ; )
