Damn, I hate to start out the New Year wrong, but there I am. This does not portend great stuff this year (or perhaps I'm getting it out of my system early?)?? I was of course (mis) using "nemesis" in its vulgar and incorrect usage as "enemy" or "antagonist." I stand corrected, and am grateful for the education.

I never associated the contests with hubris, but I might not have been paying attention. I've run all sorts of stock price contests on UTI, GLBL, CIMA--I do it when things get boring.

Back to football.

John,

Re: Stock Picking Contests

Pro: I get some good ideas from other entrants
Con: I don't like being the manager. Maybe if I didn't have a 2 yo running around the house. You also make a good point about contests only commencing during bull runs.

As far as 2001 synopsis: I finished the year at -5.5%, beating the S&P by 8.5%. My goal is to beat the S&P500 by 20% every year. Considering I typically like to ride the hottest techs, I actually consider myself fortunate to have done as well as I did.
Successes: Scored big following the Sept 11 incident. In excess of 50% portfolio gains. I think I can thank TA for not bailing out with piddling gains and thus riding out the temporary downturns.
Flops (or "learning opps): In the summer I focused too much on the ARMS Index/TRIN. BTW, this indicator did "work" once again, thus retaining its perfect record. However, I jumped in too early and experienced some big hits before coming back. Learned to check off with other indicators (re: VIX) during these vicious selloffs before committing the bulk of capital. Had I exercised more patience and paid attention to VIX, MacLellan, et. al. I would be way ahead in 2001.
