THE HIGHEST RATINGS IN HISTORY I admit Bush is popular. A lot of people around here are scared, they don't know what they're scared of, and they use Junior as a crutch. An aquantence of mine made the statement "I'm just glad that Gore isn't leading us right now". I usually ignore people and politics (in person, not in print) but I asked him. "What area, economy, the war, the environment, the traffic, or what would you expect to be worse if Gore was in office?" He thought a few seconds and then just looked entirely crushed, maybe 30 minutes later he said at least Bush isn't giving BJs in the White House. I didn't ask him if he expected Gore was planning to do this. He had a whole imaginary world of expectations that were based on nothing more than mutual reassurance. Maybe reassurance is what a lot of people need right now. It hasn't stopped the slide in the economy or found Mulla Omar or eased the traffic. TP
