Our TJ was often plagued with chin and gum infections. He had a favorite spot under a bush that was baren dust. The dust would get real warm in the sunshine and he would roll in it and rub his neck in the dirt and on the bush. It was one of his nests (He had 3, we buried him under one of them). The dirt would cause infections. We would bathe him if he was real dirty and my daughter would clean and peroxide his chin if it was getting sore. I think he got infections because of the extra fuss and attention he got, he was very very much into rituals.
My favorite ritual was that every morning he sat in another nest as soon as the newspaper arrived. When I got up I would go outside and pick up the paper. TJ would come over and lay on the paper and I would pick them both up and carry him in as if he were on a tray or a bed. That time of the morning the other cats and dogs were jumping and making noise for breakfast and he always layed above their fuss and sniffing all the way to the kitty room. He looked just like an ancient Egyptian god being carried in a sedan chair.
