To: Ron McKinnon who wrote (36471 ) 1/1/2002 5:40:46 PM From: DanZ Respond to of 53068 It looks like the consensus is to use the closing price on the last trading day of 2001 for the starting point for the contest. I believe that we've done it that way in the past anyway. To be fair to those who met the original deadline, and since there is no trading today, I am going to extend the deadline for anyone wishing to enter or change their stock picks until 10:00 PM ET tonight. The price will be the closing price yesterday. I am going to make one new rule for those who change their stock picks. You can not select the stock of a company that had news after the close that most any reasonable person would think would affect the price of the stock to your advantage. I agree that this is a judgement call, but it would be obvious if you pick a company that received a buyout at a price 50 times Monday's close, for example. <g> You don't have to reaffirm your picks if you don't want to change them. If you do want to change them, post your new picks on this thread before 10:00 PM ET. I hope that this doesn't create any confusion, but I think it is the fairest thing to do. Paul, I hope that this isn't a problem for you as I don't know when you might read this and I wanted to give people as much time as possible to decide if they want to change their picks. I'll email the final spreadsheet to you later tonight. You will need to set up a portfolio in Yahoo like last year and download a spreadsheet version of the portfolio each night to your c:\temp folder before clicking the Update button in the contest spreadsheet. I'll email a list of stocks to you that you can cut and paste into a new Yahoo portfolio. Z Port - The consensus is no limit per person. Bill, Thanks for the idea. Let's see how things go this year and we can revisit your idea next year. Ron, I need to look at how the balance calculation will be affected by shorting stocks. If I have to make a special adjustment every time we short a stock, I might renege on the offer to allow shorting. It really depends on how much time it takes to do the bookkeeping, but I'm willing to try it for a month or so.
