Do you equate the problems in Cuba with Christianity (as most Cuban are), or perhaps there other governmental practices that cuases problems. Mani, I sure hope it will change. Islam per se may not be responsible, but Islam as practiced today certainly is. Communism is not really an apt comparison, as Communism always was a specifically anti-religious movement. A better comparison might be to Christianity as practiced in Europe in the sixteenth century, which included religious wars and purifications of the faith by burning heretics alive in the auto-da-fe. Had you been around then, you could have accurately pointed out that Christianity per se was not responsible for these bad practices, and that Christianity would change. While true, this would not really have been much of a help or comfort to those being persecuted by the Inquisition! The real question imo is not what sort of religion Islam is per se, but what sort of religion is it in current practice? Do any branches of it pose a danger to us? I think the answer to this question is clearly yes -- there is an offshoot branch of Saudi Wahhabism that espouses a militant, political Islam that has declared jihad against the West. This branch has been well-funded with Saudi money and it seems to have about 100,000 active militants, judging by the numbers who have passed through the Al Quaeda training camps, plus many sympathizers, judging by the Arab press. We must understand the threat and respond to it, without condemning the rest of Islam, which does not pose a threat.
