Sonera Launches 3G Network - With No Customers

(02/01/2002, BWCS Staff) Finland has joined Norway and Sweden in having 3G networks up and running – albeit with no customers. Finnish operator Sonera said it had launched its UMTS network in four cities even though no handsets are yet available. The company reported that commercial services will start once suitable 3G phones start being supplied in number.

The launches by Telenor in Norway and Europolitan in Sweden are largely cosmetic ones designed to ensure that the operators comply with the terms of the licence award. In Sonera’s case it was obliged to have its 3G network in operation by 1 January 2002. However, the Finnish operator has said that it does not expect the market for 3G services to take off until 2004 – 2005 and it could give no indication of when 3G handsets would be available to its customers.

Nokia and Ericsson provided the equipment for Sonera’s network which covers Helsinki, Oulu, Tampere and Turku. Sonera has put the cost of rolling out its 3G network nationally at euros 500 million by 2009.
