NHP,

Sorry it took so long to get back.

I was in Europe over Christmas and
intentionally limited my PC access
time while on vacation there.

Regarding flash memory hard drives
in PC's. I posted a few months back
that one of my biggest disappointments
with my wife's new desktop is the noise
the HD and fan produce while operating.
One of the potential benefits of a flash
based drive would be power consumption
and heat generation. I am not sure what
type of gains could be achieved. (Some
articles I have seen indicate the CPU
is the main offender.) I am also not
sure of flash access times as compared
to a hard disk. Clearly cost is a limitation
as well.

I also think about the long boot up times
for laptops and wonder why laptop makers
haven't tried to follow the lead of the
handheld gadget manufacturers. "Instant On"
is a big plus. This is achieved with some
mixture of DRAM and flash. A laptop that
could boot up on command and then just sip
current from the battery would be welcomed.
Again, cost is probably the major constraint
at this juncture.

It will be interesting to see what new
applications are found as flash prices
continue to benefit from manufacturing
efficiencies like SNDK has championed.
