Thanks David...

"I am very optimistic that I will find another job within 6 months. I'm collecting the maximum unemployment benefit in the state of Florida; however, that does not pay our bills.

I seriously doubt that I will find a job in Orlando, and we are prepared to move again if necessary. I don't want to move. I would accept a sizable pay cut to remain in Orlando. My next job will be for less money. Maybe as much as 50% less....."

50% is huge.

Your statement about Y2K expenditures certainly reinforces my belief that the recovery could be more protracted than was anticipated...("V" has been discarded, "U" is currently in vogue, and I'm still wondering if "L" becomes the reality)...

I had always considered that capital expenditures would be limited as a result of the huge runnup in spending prior to Y2K....I hadn't really considered the impact of diminished earnings potential (apart from the obvious, meaning layoffs)....certainly taking major pay cuts will further impact consumer demand.....(still being touted as the holy grail of the economic recovery)

You seem relatively sanguine about your situation and better still, optimistic. At the same time I see you exhibiting some cautiousness and lowered expectations....and my guess is (based on your renovation project) you are being selective about your spending habits. And that is the kind of rational response I would expect in this environment. Not the "shop till you drop" mentality that some are promoting as a "cure" for the economy.

As far as the stimulus bill...I'm not counting on anything worthwhile. The latest rather paltry tax cut is already being demagogued as the "reason" for our disappearing "surplus"...at least none of the pols are brazen enough to be advocating tax increases when pressed...I guess that's something <vbg>

I think unemployment is going to be the key for any stimulus plan, right now it's still early in the cycle and I think the pols are betting on hiring to pick up before the villagers storm the gates pitchforks in hand....
;)

Thanks again, and good luck to you on your job search.....if you feel inclined, please keep us posted on where that takes you..

All the Best..
