I guess Eliot technically counts, and certainly belongs on your list, but he had adopted England as his country.

I just find it interesting that there isn't a writer on your list that isn't distinctly American, who wrote about distinctly American things.

I've only read one book each by Hesse and Huxley, Steppenwolf and Doors of Perception. Maybe they weren't the best examples of their work....
