great article in the WSJ today about why MSFT should pay a dividend. apparently, this reasonable suggestion is apparently rejected by the bald, ugly guy who runs the company. the real reason the ugly guy does not want to pay a dividend is that people would start valuing his stock rationally. however, it would be great if they are forced to do it. the article contained some satirical humor: they suggested "cash cows" like csco and orcl should also pay dividends. pretty soon, they will even be calling for the gorilla of cdma to pay dividends. this is great news in my opinion. as i pointed out, qcom needs to earn more than 2.60 per share IMMEDIATELY if it is to pay the average S&P 500 dividend at the average payout ratio. of course, they would need to earn much more if dividend yields start reverting to historical norms.
