Nadine, I think Mani was making the point that a tax also was mandated to Muslims it just wasn't called the same thing.

The question is whether those taxes were relatively equal or if the Dhimmi tax was more onerous on Jews. It should have been proportionally much lower than similar taxes to Muslims, since there were very unequal protections which mandated Jews to second class status in Islamic society.
